Johannes Wohnseifer’s multi-referential works reflect the history of art and design, the legacy of Pop and Minimalism, corporate branding and the fetishization of desire, politics and history. Working across a wide variety of media including painting, sculpture, video, photography, and installation, as well as the medium of the artist's book, Wohnseifer mines contemporary visual culture, appropriating, deciphering and reinterpreting a variety of visual languages, recreating, transforming and subverting their orginal meanings through his use of innovative analog and digital technical processes.

Wohnseifer’s works simultaneously reflect a system of aesthetic appropriation of historical as well as social structures, while highlighting the nearly unperceived nature of this annexation of motifs, forms, and themes in the history of culture. -  Philipp Fernandes do Brito.

Johannes Wohnseifer (b.1967, Cologne) lives and works in Cologne and Erftstadt, Germany and is a professor of painting and sculpture at the KHM / Academy of Media Arts, Cologne.

Since the 1990s, Wohnseifer has had solo exhibitions at the Parkhaus im Malkastenpark, Düsseldorf, Johann König Galerie, Seoul / Berlin / London, Linn Lühn,, Düsseldorf, Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf, Galerie Gisela Capitain, Cologne, ReMap3, Athens, Greece, Simultanhalle, Cologne, Casey Kaplan, New York and the Museum Ludwig, Cologne. Group shows over the past few years include exhibitions at the the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Boros Bunker / Boros Collec­tion, Berlin, Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf, the Kunstverein Braunschweig, MARTa Herford, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Sammlung Olbricht / me Collectors Room. Berlin, and the Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne among others. Wohnseifer has made numerous artist’s books throughout his career, including his latest, Das rote Jahr, 2021 published by Walther König, Cologne and has collaborated with various brands including Adidas and MCM. In 2023, his work will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Neuer Kunstverein Wuppertal, Germany.
